This coverage provides spatial information on dams unrelated to commercial navigation, but constructed for a variety of purposes, including flood control, power generation, and public water supplies. These dams are mapped as spill response considerations because oil recovery generally becomes more difficult after passage of a spill over a dam, due to emulsification. Locations of these dams are provided with the dam name where available. Dam locations are derived from the NID database, which provides geographic coordinates in addition to dam characteristics, operator, and use information. This coverage represents a subset of NID dams, as fire and farm pond dams have been categorically excluded, as have dams located on tributaries to ditches and tributaries to creeks. Dams constructed with lock chambers for commercial navigation are documented in a separate data layer that includes descriptive attributes.
<purpose>This coverage provides the locations of selected non-navigation dams within the Northwest Ohio Inland Sensitivity Atlas mapping area for use in oil spill contingency planning and response. The development of spatial databases and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) products is done pursuant to the Federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990 which mandated the identification of sensitive resources and the preparation of spills contingency plans nationwide.</purpose>
