This information is a set of 9,136 points representing the locations of inland lakes in Michigan, primarily lakes 10 acres and larger. For lakes with an outflowing stream, the point is intended to be located in the general vicinity of the lake outflow. For seepage lakes, without an outflow, the point is intended to be located near the center of the lake. Additional information includes the name of the lake, the location in degrees latitude and longitude, the county in which the point is located, a code for the Fisheries Management Unit of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), a code for the type of lake origin, and a unique code for each lake ("New_Key"). This unique code (e.g., 72-117), is based on the county numbers and lake numbers assigned by Humphrys and Green (1962); portions of a lake in different counties have the same New_Key. For some lakes there is also the name of the USGS topographic map on which the lake appears. A short note field may give an alternate name for the lake or other brief information. This dataset was released by James Breck, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, at the Institute for Fisheries Research. The statewide Michigan Hydrography Framework (version?) (based upon TIGER/Line Files, including basemap features based on both MDNR MIRIS files and enhanced linear referencing system built from the Michigan Accident Location Index (MALI)) was utilized as the basis of this dataset. Lake polygons present in this layer were edited (shape, attributes, location, duplicate representations for a lake in multiple counties), created for lakes that were detemined to be missing, and adjusted to reflect our current knowledge of the waterbodies throughout the state. For each lake (~10 acres or larger), a "New-Key" was assigned, based upon Humphrys and Green (1962). This unique identifier serves to link these saptial representations to numerous datasets (historical, current, and future) containing information pertaining to water quality, depth, origin, etc..
<purpose>There are two main purposes of this set of lake points. The first is to show location information for Michigan inland lakes 10 acres and larger (about 6,543 lakes), along with lake name, county, latitude, longitude, and MDNR Fisheries Management Unit. About 2,500 additional lakes smaller than 10 acres are also included. The second purpose is to enable other information on inland lakes to be viewed spatially by linking to the unique lake code (New_Key) assigned to each lake.
This dataset was developed from the Michigan Hydro framework to represent our most current information on lake area and location. It is intended for inclusion in the Digital Water Atlas of Michigan (based upon the 1:100K NHD). It is for use by state agency employees and individuals for pursuits related to the improvment of inland lake information or those assessing the state of water quality and aquatic resources in Michigan.</purpose>

<useconst>Though this dataset represents our most current and up to date information on the lakes of Michigan (~10 acres and larger), it is under continual improvement and modifications are made frequently. The latest set of improvements are made and are reflected in the name of the file (lakes_points_20050608.shp was created on 8 June 2005).</useconst>
